Network Rail Reveals Milton Keynes Headquarters

Published on 08-09-2009 by Skyscrapernews.com
Network Rail, the not for profit company that controls Britain's railways, has revealed its sprawling new headquarters in Milton Keynes that will house 3,000 people once complete.

Located on the north-western edge of the city core, a short walk from Milton Keynes Central station, the scheme is situated on the site of the national hockey stadium which is set to be demolished later this year.

Starting with an impressive all glass frontage four storeys high, the building features a body giving it a central arterial route through it, with a series of arms protruding off it. The development avoids deep floor plates and instead has the wings separated by atriums and open space allowing the natural light to penetrate what is effectively a sprawling groundscraper, topped by a series of green roofs.

Although landmark in nature, the building follows what is the established norm in Milton Keynes, a city that has somehow managed to almost completely avoid having a building over 4 floors tall and yet thanks to its corporatist American feel still managed to double for Metropolis in Superman 4.

National Rail has opened the bidding for the construction of the centre up to five contractors who are listed as Balfour Beatty, BAM, Laing ORourke, Skanska and Sir Robert McAlpine with the winner due to be announced in August 2010.

After this they anticipate work to begin on site as soon as possible and aim for a 2012 completion date.
