S333s Brown Elephant And Castle Block

S333 Architecture has designed this six storey residential building to stand on London's New Kent Road as part of the continuous stream of residential blocks the area, Elephant and Castle, is now seeing in an attempt to regenerate it.
Since S333 won the competition to design a building for the site in 2006 the plans have been gradually scaled down in height from a nine floor building to the six floors planned today although the basic massing remains unchanged.
The design of the building will be blocky and steps in height as it moves towards the neighbouring railway viaduct and the nearby Metro Vantage Central. The area is already surrounded with tall buildings with Albert Barnes House to its east and the Oakmayne Plaza development on the south side of New Kent Road.
The evolving design from S333 features zig-zagging shades of brown detailing on the south and western facades that look towards the main roundabout at Elephant and Castle and help it relate visually with Albert Barnes House whilst the eastern face of the building presents white helping it fit in the Goldfinger designed Metro Central.
Adding a splash of varying colour to the top of the project, at least in the summer, will be several levels of roof gardens for residents to enjoy. The modernist look of the scheme has a certain dutch appearance but that's hardly surprising given the links that the four main partners in S333 have with Holland.
