New Artist Quarter Proposed In Londons East End

Published on 20-05-2009 by Skyscrapernews.com
Approximately half way between the City of London and Canary Wharf is the site for this newly planned high-rise building in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Coming from the pens of architecture firm Studio One for developer Sudbury Properties, the scheme features the regeneration of a row of dilapidated Victorian terraces along the eastern end of Cable Street and the construction of a new residential tower overlooking Butcher Row.

Cashing in with the attraction of east London to wannabe artists, the scheme features a large amount of studio space for them - some 3,486 square metres in total for 100 artists. Also included is 475 square metres of commercial space, 12 live/work units and a number of retail units.

The aim of much of this is to refurbish the historic property along the northern part of the site with particular attention paid to Thames House.

On the southern half of the site there is be a substantial amount of new construction work and once more artistic pretensions feature heavily with an internal courtyard even called "Place des Artistes" that's intended to show off some public artwork and provide outside eating space for a new restaurant.

Rising next to this the plans call for two tower blocks of the scheme that host the majority of the 214 residential apartments. The one on the eastern boundary of the site will rise to 25 storeys immediately next to Butcher Row whilst a shorter tower of 15 storeys will be joined to its west by a 7 storey block.

Given the rest of the area is predominantly low-rise in nature and the renovated buildings are only 4 storeys maximum the heights for the tower element of the scheme are bound to be seen by the planning authorities as excessive and it is perhaps for this reason the developer has decided they can't pull of planning permission with the current plans and have backtracked by withdrawing the application. It should be interesting to see what they have planned next.
