17 Floor Hotel Planned In Clapham

Published on 07-05-2009 by Skyscrapernews.com
A new 17 floor hotel and retail development is being planned by property developer, the Oak Trading Company, in the very heart of London's slightly rundown Clapham.

The scheme will sit on an abandoned job centre at 155-159 Falcon Road that's located to the immediate west of the Heart of Battersea development and the famous Clapham Junction railway station.

It has been designed by Husband and Carpenter Architects who have come up with a 132 bedroom hotel tower with a detached retail block on the northern side of the site bounding Falcon Road. This should help to breathe some modern life into an area that's typically dominated by old Wimpey burger bars.

The sites most prominent location overlooking the crossroads that include St John's Hill and Lavenders Hill is reserved for the hotel tower section of the development that will help it act as something of a gateway structure to an area that lacks modern landmarks.

After the Heart of Battersea, this is only the second major planning application in central Clapham - a surprising state of affairs considering that it has one of London's major public transport nodes in it and has barely been gentrified at all in decades.

The lack of major plans has been partly due to Conservative Wandsworth Council which until recently was opposed to the construction of tall buildings in the Borough but they have recently changed their stance and a number of projects are starting to come forward. Bearing in mind the under-utilisation of Clapham, these are unlikely to be the last as property developers look to new sites they can exploit outside the pricey usual places.
