CABE Welcome 100 West Cromwell Road Plans

Published on 22-01-2009 by Skyscrapernews.com
The Commission for Architecture and Built Environment has warmly welcomed the latest set of proposals for 100 West Cromwell Road, better known as the Tesco Tower, in London.

The design from Bolles + Wilson was a complete departure from the previous plans by Woods Bagot and this time feature an 82 metre tall tower with 24 storeys and 367 apartments and share its space with a Tesco supermarket.

CABE particularly praised the "elegant form" that the torquing structure exhibits, along with the public and private space of the proposal that they call "well considered".

A hint of criticism does creep in for some of the blocks around the courtyard of the scheme which will have certain rooms without windows, something that is generally considered an unacceptable state of affairs in planning but easily resolved with a bit of re-jigging.

Contrasting with this is the praise that is also lavished on the very same blocks with many windows getting the maximum amount of direct sunlight possible.

The main concern of CABE is that the quality of the scheme could be diluted as it passes through the planning process and by the time it is completed, it could end up a poor quality facsimile of the original proposals.

CABEs solution to this is to urge the developer to retain the same design team through the development - big praise indeed for Bolles + Wilson from the notoriously hard to please quango.
